In the rapidly evolving landscape of higher education, community colleges play a vital role in fostering inclusive pathways to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) careers. The Community College S-STEM Network (CCSN) is designed to support these institutions in supporting community college practitioners in translating research into practice. In this post, we’ll explore what CCSN is, its journey over the last two years, and how community colleges can leverage this network to create impactful programs.
The Community College S-STEM Network is a collaborative initiative that focuses on strengthening the capacity of community colleges to support students in STEM fields. Our aim is to be a resource to provide community colleges the support, knowledge and resources to understand experiences of students in STEM in a centralized location. Community colleges play a vital role in helping students develop the social and cultural capital essential for navigating and staying engaged in STEM pathways, from college all the way to their careers. This network’s aim is to empower institutions to improve student success through targeted resources, research, and community engagement.
By bringing together community colleges across the nation, the network creates a platform for sharing best practices, research findings, and resources tailored specifically for STEM education for community colleges. Through the CCSN, we have been a part of the creation to implementation of the CCSN. Dr. Michelle Van Noy is Director of the Education and Employment Research Center at the School of Management and Labor Relations at Rutgers and the Co-Principal Investigator of the National Science Foundation grant that funds the CCSN. Dr. Maria Luz Espino is a contributor and researcher of the Education and Employment Research Center that manages the overarching branches of the CCSN.
Over the past two years, CCSN has experienced significant growth and development. Launched in response to the need for greater support for community colleges in the STEM, the network has mobilized a diverse group of stakeholders, including educators, administrators, and industry partners through proposal workshops, webinar series, and research.
In 2022, the inaugural CCSN webinar set the stage for the network’s mission. Through this event, participants engaged in discussions about the challenges and opportunities within community colleges regarding STEM education. We are passionate about building connections among institutions and sharing insights on student support.
The motivation driving CCSN’s research and network-building initiatives is deeply rooted in the recognition of the unique challenges faced by community college students pursuing careers in STEM fields. Many of these students come from diverse backgrounds and encounter socioeconomic barriers that significantly impede their academic progress. Through comprehensive research and the dissemination of valuable insights, CCSN seeks to shine a light on these challenges and offer actionable strategies that institutions can adopt to create a more supportive environment. By enhancing the institutional capacity of community colleges, CCSN not only aims to uplift and empower these students but also ensures that they are better equipped to thrive in STEM disciplines over the long term.
The aim of CCSN is to create clear pathways for students, ensuring that they have access to the resources, support systems, and opportunities necessary to succeed. By fostering collaboration among community colleges, CCSN can facilitate the sharing of effective practices that have proven successful in enhancing student retention and completion rates in STEM programs.
For community colleges looking to enhance their STEM programs, CCSN offers a wealth of resources and support. Here are a few ways you can utilize the network to build capacity:
- Engage in Collaborative Learning: Join CCSN’s webinars and workshops to connect with fellow educators and administrators. Share your experiences and learn from others who are facing similar challenges. This collaborative environment fosters innovation and helps you identify best practices that can be implemented at your institution.
- Participate in Proposal Workshops: CCSN hosts proposal workshops that help community colleges navigate the complexities of securing funding for S-STEM initiatives. These workshops provide insights into crafting competitive proposals that align with National Science Foundation priorities.
- Partake in the Research to Practice Clinics: Launching soon, the research to practice clinics are a way for your organization to collaborate and partner with the CCSN to develop aptitude for translating research insights into meaningful practices intended to promote student success in your learning environments.
- Research Fellowship Opportunities: Starting in 2025, the CCSN will offer research fellowships for participants to tackle local STEM education challenges while gaining valuable skills in data collection, analysis, and applying findings to improve educational practices.
The CCSN offers a vital resource for community colleges striving to enhance STEM programs and support students. By fostering collaboration, sharing best practices, and providing targeted resources, CCSN empowers institutions, practitioners, faculty, and researchers to use our resources to explore and use for their needs. Together, through innovation and shared commitment, we can transform the educational landscape and open doors to new opportunities for the next generation of STEM leaders.
