Cultivating a sense of community and belonging in STEM has been deeply tied to embracing and sharing my identity as a Puerto Rican woman in STEM. I have found that representation matters with inspiring myself and others to take on an education or career in STEM, reinforcing the idea that when one of us succeeds, it opens the door of potential, capability and possibility for all of us. I have worked to create spaces where others feel heard and supported by mentoring peer students and sharing my experiences. Sharing with and providing students who both seek and offer help with resources to expand their network, opportunities for support in getting their questions answered or simply having a shoulder to lean on as they navigate an education in STEM.

Personally, I found the S-STEM Scholars Meeting to be vital in restoring my confidence as I pursue an education and eventual career in medicine. Attending the conference provided me with the chance to connect with other Latino and underrepresented STEM students and to seek guidance from students on a similar path. Providing me with necessary mentorship from peer students who understand the unique challenges we all face. As an NSF S-STEM Scholar, I strive to extend that same sense of belonging to others by supporting my peers, celebrating diverse perspectives, and encouraging collaboration. My culture’s emphasis on resilience and community continues to shape how I show up in academic and professional settings. Reminding me that building a community in STEM is as important for individual achievement as it is for uplifting one another and ensuring that everybody has a seat at the table.
