The moment I learned that I was not my mother’s biological child and that I was conceived through in vitro fertilization was a pivotal one for me. It opened up a whole new world of questions about genetics, identity, and the incredible scientific advances that made my existence possible. This revelation sparked a profound interest in genetics—how our genes shape us, the ways in which they can be manipulated or understood, and the ethical questions that arise from this knowledge.
I found myself fascinated by the mechanisms that underlie human life, from DNA sequences to the broader implications of genetic engineering. This journey into the world of STEM felt like a way to explore my own story while contributing to a field that could help others understand theirs. I am contributing to a field that touches on the core of human experience. For some, understanding their genetic makeup might clarify health risks, inform decisions about family planning, or offer insights into ancestral roots. For others, it could help answer questions about identity, relationships, and even cultural heritage.
What keeps me motivated in this field is, above all, my family and S-STEM mentors. My family, because their love and support have been unwavering; they remind me why I want to become a geneticist and professor. My mentors, because they’ve guided me, encouraged me, and shown me the path forward. They help me see the broader impact my work can have, not just in the scientific community but in society as a whole.
Knowing that I have a support system that believes in me fuels my drive to continue exploring, learning, and contributing to the field of genetics. I want to honor the people who have played a role in my education by pursuing excellence in my work, seeking answers to complex questions, and helping others who might one day walk a similar path.
