Dax Ovid is an Assistant Professor at the University of Georgia. Research from their lab – Collaborative Opportunities for Research in Physiology and Undergraduate Science (CORPUS) Education – focuses on embodied, empathic, expansive, and transdisciplinary ways of teaching physiology to support the well-being of students and future professionals. Their vision for the future of STEM is one that pushes boundaries of what it means to be a scientist. To work towards this broad vision, they have published research on emotional intelligence in biology education research and curricula featuring the stories of counterstereotypical scientists. They envision a world where community lived experiences inform research questions and where research findings shape education and policy to support the welfare of all living beings.
In addition to teaching and researching physiology education, Dr. Ovid presently serves as the Associate Director of the UGA Scientists Engaged in Education Research (SEER) Center and on the advisory board for the American Physiology Society Center for Physiology Education.
Without financial support to do undergraduate research at UC Berkeley through the Biology Scholars Program, they would have never had the experience necessary to apply for a PhD program. Programs that provide this kind of support, like S-STEM, deserve our support.
