Ephraim Massawe

Headshot of Ephraim Massawe.

Dr. Ephraim Massawe holds a BSC in Chemical and Process Engineering from the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. He earned a Postgraduate Diploma in Environmental Science and Technology from IHE Delft, The Netherlands, followed by an MSc in Environmental Science and Technology from Murdoch University, Australia. He completed another MSc in Industrial Hygiene and a Sc.D. in Industrial Hygiene (Occupational and Environmental Health) at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. He is a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) and Exposure Decision Analysis (EDA) Registry Expert of the American Industrial Hygiene Association.

Dr. Massawe is a Professor of Occupational and Environmental Health at Southeastern Louisiana University’s OSHE Academic Program, accredited by ABET. He teaches courses in Industrial Hygiene, Toxicology, Environmental Laws, and Risk Assessment. His research includes indoor air quality (IAQ) assessments for asthma management, site remediation using engineered nanoparticles (ENPs), and modeling health risks related to ENPs. He also studies silica exposure in construction and noise exposure using Bayesian Decision and Statistical Modeling.

In addition to teaching, Dr. Massawe leads research, mentors students, and provides professional services in Occupational and Environmental Health. He is the Principal Investigator of a Nano-informatics project aimed at improving work practices at U.S. EPA National Priority List Superfund Sites, focusing on ENP-related health risks.

Dr. Massawe also leads the Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Program for Tangipahoa Parish Public Schools, using EPA’s Tools for Schools Action Kit to improve IAQ and reduce asthma rates.
His Nanoinformatics project aims to enhance information management for nanotechnology safety, collaborating with state agencies, NIOSH, and other key stakeholders. He organized the Nano-4-Rem-aNssERs conference, which included extensive student participation and is documented on the conference website.

Dr. Massawe has been a member of the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH®) since 2006, serving on the TLV Chemical Substances Committee. He has been with the AIHA since 2004, founded its student local section at SELU, and is the student coordinator for the Deep South Section. He has served on the ABET Program Evaluation (PEV) Committee and was recently nominated as Team Chair (TC) for ABET’s Applied Natural Science Accreditation Commission (ANSAC). He is also a member of other professional societies, including ASSP (formerly American Society of Safety Engineers – ASSE), National Environmental Health Association (NEHA), American Public Health Association (APHA), and The International Society for Respiratory Protection (ISRP).

Dr. Massawe has made significant contributions to Occupational and Environmental Health through fieldwork, exposure assessments, and his leadership in the field.
