Mary Jane Carmichael is an associate professor of biology and environmental science at Hollins University. She began her career as a high school science teacher. After an inspiring trip to Yellowstone National Park, she made the decision to go back to school and pursue a M.S. in microbiology and a Ph.D. in biogeochemistry. While she gets excited about any kind of research involving microorganisms, she is particularly interested in microorganisms that play a role in the biogeochemical cycles of CH4, Fe, and Mn. Mary Jane’s research has taken her from the mountains to the sea, from belly crawling in caves in eastern Tennessee to mucking through wetlands in coastal North Carolina. She serves as the PI for Hollins University’s S-STEM-funded Artemis Scholarship Program for Women in STEM.
